  • Belgian Nuclear Expertise Stronger Than Ever at World Nuclear Exhibition 2025

The World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE), the biennial global event for the nuclear industry took place in Paris this week. The exhibition brings together thousands of professionals, policymakers, and experts to explore the future of nuclear technology and discuss international cooperation across borders.

The Belgian Nuclear Forum, in collaboration with Agoria and the Belgian Nuclear Society (BNS), coordinates the Belgian participation in this prestigious event. With no less than 15 Belgian companies presenting their expertise and innovations at the Belgian Pavilion, this edition represents the largest-ever Belgian presence at the WNE. The participating companies cover a wide range of nuclear activities – from engineering and research to component manufacturing, logistics, digitalisation, and waste management.

Belgium as a Nuclear Competence Hub

Belgium has developed strong and versatile nuclear expertise that is recognised worldwide.

“Belgium has always played a pioneering role in nuclear technology and remains an important nuclear competence hub,” says Serge Dauby, Managing Director of the Belgian Nuclear Forum. “That is clearly visible here today at the Belgian Pavilion, with 15 companies showcasing world-class nuclear expertise. They are ready for the global nuclear revival that is now on the horizon — including here in Belgium.”

A similar message comes from Agoria, co-organiser of the Belgian Pavilion:

“Agoria’s nuclear technology companies and the Belgian Nuclear Forum, together with Belgian research institutions and our government, are fully committed to supporting the European nuclear renaissance,” says Christian Dierick, leader of Big Science TECH BELGIUM and nuclear expert at Agoria. “This renaissance will not just be an element of Europe’s energy transition, but one of the key pillars ensuring sustainable and secure electricity for European industry and consumers. Belgian technology companies are fully ready to play their crucial role.”

A nuclear revival is also expected in Belgium itself, following the recent revision of the nuclear phase-out law by the new government, with Minister Bihet responsible for Energy.

“The road to ‘new nuclear’ in Belgium is open again,” adds Dauby.

Minister Bihet opens the Belgian Pavilion

With the official presence of Minister Bihet, the Belgian government once again highlights its support for the expertise, innovation and strategic role of the nuclear industry in Belgium. Minister Bihet personally inaugurated the Belgian Pavilion, stating:

“Belgium has a nuclear sector of exceptional quality, driven by companies and talents capable of integrating the most demanding supply chains in the world. After twenty years of uncertainty, it is time to tap into this knowhow again, rebuild our industrial capacities and prepare the future of ‘new nuclear’. The Belgian Pavilion is a striking proof of this: our country remains an international reference, ready to fully contribute to the European nuclear revival.”

Strengthening the Nuclear Supply Chain

One of this year’s main themes is the need to strengthen the nuclear supply chain. The growing demand for nuclear technologies – both internationally and domestically – will lead to an increasing need for qualified engineers and skilled workers.

“The biggest challenge for our sector lies in attracting and training sufficient talent to make the nuclear supply chain future-proof,” emphasises Dauby. “We will continue to support Belgian companies in obtaining the necessary qualifications and certifications so they can actively participate in the nuclear supply chain. In addition, enhanced cross-border collaboration will be essential.”

It is no coincidence that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was previously signed between the Belgian Nuclear Forum and GIFEN, the French nuclear industry association, following the Franco-Belgian agreement on nuclear cooperation between Minister Bihet and her French counterpart. Today, the Belgian Nuclear Forum also signs a Letter of Intent with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) of Canada, which has expressed interest in becoming a potential operator of SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) in Belgium.

The Belgian Nuclear Society (BNS), a learned society promoting the advancement of science and technology for all peaceful uses of nuclear energy, also stands ready to continue supporting nuclear power in Belgium and across the European Union.

“Our recent event on nuclear skills, education, training and workforce clearly demonstrated the need for coordinated action among all stakeholders in the sector,” says Michèle Auglaire, President of BNS.

What does the future hold?

The future of nuclear energy in Belgium looks brighter than a few years ago, yet what is still missing is a long-term strategy and a clear roadmap. The Belgian Nuclear Forum therefore calls on the government to urgently bring all relevant parties together. There is a need for a realistic and evidence-based strategy for Belgium’s energy policy.

“Our energy-intensive industries, such as steel and chemicals, are struggling to survive,” warns Dauby. “They deserve a serious, pragmatic approach to energy policy – one that moves away from ideological dogmas. Nuclear energy can no longer be ignored when addressing the recurring energy trilemma: security of supply, affordability, and sustainability.”

“The nuclear sector stands ready to assist the Minister of Energy and her administration in achieving Belgium’s objectives on energy transition and security of supply. If we can maintain the constructive collaboration between all stakeholders that we’ve seen in recent months, we’ll be back here at the next WNE with 30 Belgian companies at the Pavilion,” concludes Dauby.
